This was one of my first sessions before the Holiday's. The oldest is my son's BFF from Preschool, Pre-K. They are both 8 now and even though they don't go to the same school anymore when they see each other it is like no time has passed. They were such a joy to photograph. I can't wait until our next session!

Going through my September photos I realized I had a LOT of favorites! I thought I would pick one of my favorites that I don't think I have shared before. This photo was taken on September 7, 2011. I had the day off work and I took the girls to visit my mom at the mall. (She works in Guest Services as the Supervisor) After we had lunch we perused The Children's Place and they fell in love with these hats. I of course had to buy two so they could each have one. The funniest part is it was 101 degrees outside!

I was just looking at my photos from July, August and September and I can't believe I have to narrow it down to five. I did not realize that with each month I found new all time favorite photos! So here it goes... In no particular order.

1. Sophia ~ My favorite out of this bunch is the largest image. This is my cousins only daughter and the youngest of 4! She is such a sweetheart and the camera loves her! I wish they did not live so far away in Hong Kong so I could take her picture more often :)

2. Curious ~ This is my middle child and she is so mischievous! This was taken the same day the above photo of Sophia was taken. I normally take lots of pictures of faces and I love how this is different for me.

3. Brooklyn ~ This is my niece and it was taken a day after the above images. We were attending a 4th of July celebration at her house. She was actually very happy to be holding this tiny little dog. I just happened to capture her in a serious moment. I love her expression and I feel like her eyes are really saying something here.

4. Abby ~ I have skipped the entire month of August and plenty of other photos that I love to get to these last two. For both I was just outside my back door with the girls facing the backyard. I wanted to take advantage of the available light. I love how in focus and crisp her eyes turned out in this one.

5. Sydney ~ my middle one. aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh I really could not choose between these last two. I guess if I had to I like the candid one best but it is so hard for me to get a picture of her that is in focus (she is a girl on the go!) that I like the 2nd one too.

I guess I should feel lucky to have so many favorite photos from the past quarter. I really like that putting together the post for Click it Up a Notch Quarterly Top 5 requires me to look through all my photos. Makes me appreciate them and inspires me to want to take more!

Last Thursday I had the day off and took the kids to the park. The oldest and middle decided they would play with the drinking fountain. It was really really hot out so I let them for about 5 minutes. This is a shot of the middle one absolutely enjoying it!

*it's slightly blurry because she was moving so much. I am still trying to figure out the settings on my camera :)

I actually had several favorite photos from July so this was pretty difficult. This one really stands out for me as a favorite. It is a little different as I normally take portrait type photos. I just love how it really shows her curious little personality :)

As a side note the shadow of the flowers is from the sun reflecting off the window of a house behind my parents house. I just love the image it created.

My middle child is so hard to capture. On "film" and with your hands. She is definitely a girl-on-the-go. My husband had to take my car to work this day last week due to his car being in the shop. I decided to take my youngest two outside to take some pictures. The youngest can't walk yet and cooperated beautifully. On the flip side most of the shots I got from my middle child were of the back of her head. That is what makes this one so special :) She just looks precious here as if she was posing for me.

I have not quite figured out how to make a color block in Lightroom 3. I saw a tutorial on how to make one in LR2 but the slideshow tab in LR3 does not have a save to jpg option. I could just make the image first in Photoshop but I was trying to avoid that step. For now I am please with the results. Here are two more examples

LIGHTROOM COLLAGES
I have been playing around with how to make blog storyboard templates and collages in Lightroom. It is such a time saver not having to go into Photoshop. Post a comment if you need help or have a question.

How to install your templates:

Download the zip file. Open the zip file and extract the files and save them on your computer.
Open the print module in Lightroom. To import your new template go to the left hand side in the template browser right click and hit import. Locate the file you just downloaded. Double-click the template file.

How to use your templates:

Edit your images in the develop module first
Go to the print module to use the templates
In most cases you drag and drop the photos. Sometimes you click on the photo in your collection at the bottom and it will populate the template.
On the right in the print module you can adjust colors then use "print to file" to create a digital copy :)

These are suitable for online. I have not tried printing them yet.

I had the day off work today which means I get to be with my kids and take pictures! I took my flash off and used only natural light. It was raining on and off so the light was limited. The lens I used is my Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6. I had it in manual and just played around with it. I had to put the ISO at 800 so the images were not so dark. The down side is they can be grainy. I edited the photos in Lightroom and used Isabelle Lafrance Photography 's Soulshine preset Holy Night. It is available as a freebie on her blog.

I want this new lens. I have heard a lot of great things and the images from it look amazing. It works well with low light and seems like such a great deal for the price. I think I will sell some old baby stuff that I don't use anymore on eBay so I can justify getting it :)

I have not mastered the low light picture taking just yet and because of that much of my indoor natural light photography is grainy. I tend to use an ISO of 1600 or 800 to make the pictures lighter and because my subjects are always moving. For now my subjects tend to be my 3 kids. Here is a black and white of my youngest. Her hand is slightly blurry but I still like the shot. I used BW Dependable preset from Wonderland.

For this one I used Soulshine [Holy Night] then presetopia v1 Noise Reduction +1.

Maple Mars Photo Shoot

Last Saturday I had a photo shoot with my neighbors band Maple Mars. I brought along Lee from Alpert Photography since I am new to photography and wanted to make sure they got at least one good shot. Rick had some great ideas and most of the photos were taken at our local park. They have an amazing rock structure which is perfect for pictures. I used Lightroom for all the processing. I am going to attempt Photoshop but still need some practice.

Sydney (2 years old) almost never sits still. Quite the contrast from my oldest who is 7. When he was her age he never got into anything. We never child proofed a single cabinet. He would sit and play so nicely and cooperated when I wanted to take pictures.

I never realized how drastically different kids are! Now I wonder how #3 will be.... (she is only 9 months but I think she is already just like her sister)

I subscribe to the daily Martha Stewart Craft email. When I saw this craft it looked so super cute and seemed easy. The wallet craft is by Dear Sukie and she has more posted on her etsy store. I have yet to try it myself but when I do I will post pics :)

Paper-Vinyl Wallet

From the Martha Stewart Website

Make a charming wallet out of decorative paper and vinyl with this simple process from crafter Kristy Boucher.

Tools and Materials

Wallet templates one and two
Medium-weight scrapbook paper
Craft knife
Pencil
Decorative paper
Scissors
Clear vinyl (medium weight)
Sewing machine with non-stick presser foot
Sewing machine needle for vinyl
Coordinating thread
Pen
Snap closure

Wallet How-To

1. Print and cut wallet templates one and two from scrapbook paper. Trace templates onto decorative paper and cut out. (If desired, the pieces can be cut from different coordinating papers.) Mark the spot for the snap on the main wallet piece, as shown on the template.

2. Fold a piece of vinyl over top of short, non-rounded side of main wallet piece. Keeping edge of paper right at fold, machine-sew a line across width of paper, 1/4 inch from fold.

3. Cover pocket pieces 1, 2, and 3 with vinyl in the same way, this time folding the vinyl over the long edge of each piece of paper.

4. Fold a piece of vinyl over a short side of the wallet closure tab piece. Machine-sew through vinyl, just off the edges of the paper, all around three sides (do not sew the fold).

5. Along the bottom (non-fold) edges, line up the three pocket pieces on top of each other in numerical order (descending size). Trim vinyl on bottom edge through all pieces, leaving a little extra -- about 1/2 inch -- for sewing.

6. With a pen, mark a stitching line down the center of the assembled pocket pieces, which will divide the pockets into two card-sized sections.

7. On right (outside) side of main wallet piece, line up assembled pocket pieces to side edges, with fold of bottom pocket piece 1/4 inch below fold of main body piece. Sew along the stitching line you have marked, attaching pocket pieces onto wallet body. Sew just along the bottom edge of pockets, again securing pockets to main piece.

8. Center the closure tab on the center pocket stitching, lining up the short folded edge with the top of the stitching. Secure the opposite end of the closure tab in place on the body by carefully stitching a square with an "X" in it.

9. Lay wallet right side down, and fold up pockets to center, pressing firmly, to create a long pocket for bills. Machine-sew through the vinyl, just off the edges of the paper, all around sides and top rounded edge of wallet. Do not sew along pocket fold.

10. Trim all excess vinyl. Attach snaps to body and closure tab.

Chore Cards

During one of my middle of the night infant feedings I came across this blog: 320*Sycamore. As a mom of 5 she often comes up with really good ideas. She shared how she handles chores with her kids. I thought since I was home for some of the summer I would adopt this idea and use it with my two older kids. Well that did not happened as I planned but I still want to implement the chore card idea. We have been seeing a behavioral therapist for our oldest and he suggested having structure and routine. This would be perfect!

Discovery of Lightroom

A friend of mine just introduced me to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. I can not believe I was deprived for so long! I love love love it.

I am in my last week of maternity leave before I go back to work :( I decided to take all 3 kinds on an outing last week. Here are some pictures I took at the Santa Barbara Zoo on July 1st.

The first picture is of my dad on the 4th of July.

All photos were done using Kelsey Smith presets.

I just loved

these two photos. She is a very hard one to photograph because she is always on the go. It makes for great candid shots!

Kids Cupboard Organized

The only cupboard not closed off to the toddler in my kitchen is the one that houses all of the kids stuff. Plates, bowls, sippys, stuff for sippys, sippy straws, etc. I was having trouble figuring out an inexpensive and easy to keep it organized. I was roaming the isles at Target picking up many different kinds of storage bins (many were kinda pricey) when I decided on the Sterilite 6qt storage bin. It is cheap and clear so you can see what's in them. It was also the perfect dimension for what I needed. You can pull it out, get what you need and put it back. It's easy for the kids too :)

Are you a Middle Sister?

So I may not be a middle sister.... but I have one. I hosted a bridal shower for my middle sister this weekend at my house. My wonderful mother did all of the food any my responsibility was beverages. My sister requested mimosas for the main beverage. When it came to wine I instantly thought of Middle Sister Wines. I was at Target about a year ago with my best friend and she showed them to me. She has three girls and wanted to buy some to save for the middle sister.

Here are pics of the wines we got. I did not buy the Wicked White wine but I just might have to get my sister a wicked white shirt! Too Cute :)

I made this card for my sister's birthday. I just love the font Albermarle Swash using the lowercase letters. The bottom half is patterned paper with an adhesive ribbon to tie it together. I added the pink rhinestone for the dot on the eye to add sparkle.

I had been doing necklaces with flowers to the side. This is my first with one in the middle. I also made the flower look like it was blooming more (my mom's suggestion) I think it turned out great :)

I made this card for a friends wedding. I just love the simplicity of it and the super cute font for the names. I could make them personalized or unpersonalized. I think I like them best with the names. You could do a birthday, anniversary, wedding. What else would these be good for?

2nd Burp Cloth

Here is my 2nd attempt at a burp cloth. This one is made with chocolate brown velor fabric on the back with a blue and chocolate brown damask on the front.

This is my first attempt at sewing. I am actually very pleased with how this turned out. The blue fabric is a little heavier than normal and the back is a white chenille. :)

First, this purse was created from a book (a real live book)! And would you just look at the wooden beads on the handle? Fabulous! The lining has pretty polka dots, too! I really hesitated to feature this today, because I fear that one of you readers might buy it.
